German Shepherd puppy weight calculator

German Shepherds have one of the widest weight ranges of any popular breed, and a big gap between males and females. They often go through gangly phases where ears, legs and paws seem to grow ahead of the body.

How German Shepherd puppies grow

  • Most German Shepherds reach adult height around 12–15 months and keep gaining muscle until about 2 years.
  • Males commonly weigh 15–20 lb more than females.
  • Working and show lines differ in build. Working-line dogs tend to be leaner, so compare with your puppy’s parents where possible.

Tips for healthy growth

  • Large-breed puppy food helps keep growth steady, which matters for a breed prone to hip and elbow problems.
  • Avoid letting your puppy get heavy: extra weight puts strain on developing joints.
  • Keep a monthly weight log. A growth curve that suddenly flattens is worth mentioning to your vet.
