How Labrador Retriever puppies grow

  • Expect rapid gains up to about 6 months, followed by slower, steadier growth until 12–18 months.
  • Males are usually 10–15 lb heavier than females as adults.
  • English (show) Labs are often stockier than American (field) Labs, so two healthy Labs of the same age can differ in weight.

Tips for healthy growth

  • Labs are prone to overeating. Weigh portions rather than scooping, and count treats as part of daily food.
  • Keep exercise moderate while they grow: long runs and repeated jumping are best left until growth plates close.
  • A body-condition check (a visible waist from above, ribs easy to feel) matters more than hitting an exact number.
